The Oberoi Udaivilas sprawling fan out over 30 acres, and enclose 90 rooms, an 800 feet- long pool bordering the rooms, 3 restaurants (two indoor, one outdoor), a bar gym, a spa and meeting facilities, among other features. The grounds themselves are a sight for concrete – inured eyes and feature manicured lawns and a variety of flora through which peacocks stalk impudently. The exclusive location of the Udaivilas ensures that no matter what the time of the day, the only sounds you are likely to hear as you walk through the property are the soft gurgle of water from the many fountains and pools nearby, and the shrill cries of the peacocks as they fan out their tails and dance out their colourful welcome to the rains.
The restaurant serve up traditional Rajasthani foods as well as Western, Mediterranean and Thai dishes. It is a good idea to lunch at the Surymahal (one of the indoor restaurants) where the large windows filter in the sunlight, and the spacious, stately seating ensures that your meal is an unforgettable experience. Do try the excellent Goan Prawn curry the chef dishes out – that alone is enough to make your lunch memorable. For dinner, make a reservation at the romantic Udaimahal, where the midnight – blue dome decorated with golden stars sets the mood and live musicians serenade you with instrumental renditions of Rajasthani, Hindustani classical and even Bollywood (should your tastes run to it)melodies. The restaurant is understandably proud of its Laal Maas (the fiery mutton curry native to Rajasthan), but what is even more commendable is its Tomato Shorba (soup) that seems to magically combine the tastes of the East and West. For a perfect relaxing end to your day, sip on a cocktail and let the music and the atmosphere wash over you. The staffs are unfailingly courteous and usually more than happy to arrange for sightseeing, picnic lunches and even family activities, should you require them. They are even kind enough to show you to your room if you lose your way (as you are quite likely to) in the labyrinthine hotel complex.
Do make time for a treatment as the world – class spa that overlooks the private swimming pool that overlooks the lake. The treatments on offer range from traditional Ayurvedic therapies to Thai and Balinese massages to beauty treatments and even personalised Yoga sessions. Get pampered from the word go, as treatments begin with a welcoming foot-soak in the warm water and rose- petal bath. You can pick from a range of oils and incenses for use during your treatment and the deft hands of the masseur ensure that when you step out after your treatment, you are completely rejuvenated.
