Mutton Stew – a less spicy dish

Mutton Stew is a very common style of cooking mutton in Kerala, especially as a combination for Vellayappam, Noolpittu (Idiyappam), Puttu etc.  This is a less spicy dish and thus a favorite recipe for the tourists from western countries.   Let us see the preparation of Mutton Stew recipe.

Mutton-Stew Ingredients

  • Mutton – 1/2 kg
  • Green chilli – 4
  • Ginger – 1 tablespoon, chopped
  • Garlic – 1 tablespoon, chopped
  • Cardamom – 3-4
  • Cinnamon – 1 piece
  • Clove – 3
  • Pepper – 5-6
  • Turmeric powder – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Garam masala – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Cornflour – 1-2 tablespoon
  • Large onion – 2
  • Tomato – 1-2
  • Potato – 1 (cut into cubes)
  • Carrot – 1 (cut into cubes)
  • Thick Coconut milk – 2 cups
  • Mutton stock – 1 cup
  • Salt & Oil – for taste
  • Curry leaves

How to prepare Mutton Stew ?

  • Boil mutton pieces with whole masalas, salt , and carrot.
  • Heat oil and sauté potatoes and keep aside
  • Heat oil and sauté chopped onions, then sauté ginger chopped, when aroma comes out add garlic & green chillies and stir
  • Add cooked mutton pieces along with carrot and potato
  • Add turmeric powder to it and stir well
  • Add tomato pieces & garam masala & salt to taste and cornflour, then blend well
  • Continue to simmer till the meat is tender.
  • Then add the extracted coconut milk , and stir it and light boil for 3 minutes
  • Garnish with Curry Leaves and serve hot
